From Journal to Journey: How I Turned My Inner Work into an Album with AI
Super Simple Summary
This post shares André Barnard's journey from journaling to creating his debut album 'My Time to Grow' using AI tools like ChatGPT and Suno. It covers the inspiration, creative process, and practical steps for independent music release, offering insights for aspiring artists interested in AI-powered songwriting.
🌱 The Spark That Started It All
A few months ago, I started journaling—not because I had to, but because something in me knew it was time. I had been listening to The Mindset Mentor podcast by Rob Dial, and his message hit home:
"Feel the fear—but do it anyway. Action is the only way you’ll learn and grow."
That quote traces back even further to Susan Jeffers’ powerful book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway: How to Turn Your Fear and Indecision into Confidence and Action. It’s a message that has echoed through my creative journey, helping me move forward even when doubt tried to hold me back.
So I bought a green journal with a tree embossed on the cover. That little symbol became my personal metaphor for growth—roots in the present, branches reaching for possibility.
I didn’t plan to write an album. I just wanted to make sense of my thoughts. But as I kept journaling, something unexpected happened: lyrics began to emerge. Themes began to repeat. Emotions found rhythm. And one day, I realized—I was writing songs.
🎧 Enter Aidre: My Musical Alter Ego
Aidre (pronounced eye-dre) is the name I chose for this musical project. The "Ai" is a nod to both artificial intelligence and artistic insight, while "dre" anchors it in my identity. Together, it's how I see the world—written by soul, shaped by signal.
To release my music independently, I created Ink and Echo, my personal label and creative studio. Because what starts as ink in a journal deserves to echo in the world.
🛠️ From Page to Playback with ChatGPT & Suno
Once I had raw lyrics from my journal, I turned to ChatGPT to help shape them. I would paste messy ideas and fragments into the chat and say something like:
"Hey, can you help me turn this journal entry into a song structure? Verse, chorus, bridge—keep it personal."
ChatGPT helped me format my thoughts, smooth out transitions, and suggest metaphors that better captured my feelings. It never replaced my voice—but it definitely sharpened it.
Next came Suno—a tool that turns text into fully-produced songs using generative AI. It was like discovering a musical sketchpad that could sing. I tried out different vibes and landed on EDM, which just felt like the right fit. For me, Electronic Dance Music is about expressing yourself through sound—even if you’re not a trained singer or musician. That’s what drew me to it: the landscape is so open to different styles and creative approaches, especially when you’re building tracks electronically. I’m not saying EDM artists aren’t talented (they absolutely are!), but I love how the genre welcomes experimentation and new voices like mine.

🎵 My Time to Grow: The Album
My Time to Grow is a collection of 18 songs that emerged from this season of reflection. It's honest, experimental, and a little scary to share. But like Rob Dial said—you grow by doing the thing that scares you.
The second track, "Growing Out of Green," is a direct reference to my journal. The album cover features that same green book, surrounded by personal symbols—boxing gloves, beach sand, a PlayStation controller, and handwritten notes.
📅 Release Date: June 18, 2025

🌟 Final Thoughts
I never set out to make an album—I set out to understand myself. But when you start writing honestly, when you let your thoughts hit the page and echo back with clarity, amazing things can happen.
This is only the beginning for Aidre and Ink and Echo. I’m still learning, still scared, and still growing.
And maybe that’s the best place to be.
